I have finished – free like a bird until May. I am obsessed with anything Penelope Douglas writes, so obviously I had to read Next To Never as soon as possible!

Also….I am going to RARE 17 in Berlin in June and guess who’s gonna be there? YES! Penelope Douglas!!!!!!

Review:

Can we just take a moment and appreciate the US cover? While you should not judge a book by its cover, the UK one is probably my least favourite in the series! Anyway, the content is important and no matter how much I dislike the UK cover, I LOVED Next To Never.

It is a novella, so I will keep it short. Quinn – Jared, Jax and Madoc’s sister is definitely an interesting character that needs to be more in depth. I’m so glad she is gonna have a full-length novel. She seems a bit lost and I think a lot of people could relate. That’s one of the charms of Penelope Douglas’ writing. Her characters are unapologetically real. We are caught up with my favourites – Jared and Tate, Madoc and Fallon and of course, Jax and Juliet. It is a bit strange how grown up yet still the same they are. I’m finding myself craving a Fall Away series re-read!

So what is Next to Never actually about? It gets a bit meta! One day, Quinn receives a book that goes into detail about her parents’ love story, as well as her brothers’. Reading snippets of how Jason and Katherine got together was a real treat, as heartbreaking as it was sometimes. Personally, I did not complain about some sex scenes between Jason and Katherine because let’s be real, it’s part of every relationship, but I could not help myself and cringe a little if I was Quinn. If I ever got a book like that (about my parents), I would probably burn it and scratch my eyes out! 😀

Next To Never is a perfect novella to get us all excited about the next generation – I know I am! Dylan (Jared and Tate’s daughter) is already my fave and I am BEYOND READY to read her love story!!!!!!!!!!

Have you ever read a book and you just thought “This is it.”? Well THIS IS IT. This is THE book that has EVERYTHING I have ever wanted. Basically, if PUNK 57 was a guy, we would be married. This book is THAT good.

How do I start? PENELOPE DOUGLAS’ BEST WORK. From the first page, I knew I was in trouble. PUNK 57 is not just an ordinary romance. It has angst, mystery, peer pressure, MUSIC (!!!!!!!!!!!), sex, REAL CHARACTERS, growth… the list goes on. Honestly, I have never read a romance book (non-LGBT+) that has so much substance and the plot is so well thought out. There are romance books that deal with things that only unlucky people can relate to. I believe everyone can relate to the topic/theme that PUNK 57 deals with. As much as I love all of Penelope Douglas’ work, I don’t think any of her other work can measure with this gem. I hate when I can predict the plot and I could not have guessed PUNK 57. I read it in a one go, straight away until 3.40 am. Best night in a while, LOL.

The reason why this book is on a whole another level are the characters. Ryen. Oh Ryen. What can I say? She is the star of this book. She is not what you expect. Perfect. Flawed. I hated her. I loved her. Penelope Douglas, never have I felt so strongly about a character in my life. This character is real. And you will understand exactly what I mean when you read PUNK 57. And then there’s Misha. I always said Jared Trent (from Bully and Until You) will always be my favourite. I think Jared might have some serious competition in Misha. He is bad. He has issues. He is so bloody hot. Definitely got my blood going.  Ryen and Misha are incredibly written characters. You will no doubt recognise yourself in them. I am so happy that this book came out now when I am 21 – still growing, but definitely in a position of self-reflection on my high school years.

PUNK 57 is more than worthy of your time. You need this book in your life. I hope and wish this book will get the recognition it deserves because I am judgemental. I read books that I hate with passion. But PUNK 57 just makes me so happy, so proud that I got to chance to read it, I can’t stress enough how much I want you to go and buy this book and fall in love with it as much as I did. This book doesn’t fuck around. It doesn’t drag and doesn’t feel forced. PUNK 57 is so organic and just amazing.

This book went on my close-to-my-heart shelf. And I have been described as cold bitch so this is a big deal. So there you have it. Go buy this book. NOW.

Shout out to the Corrupt characters! When book “cross-overs” happen, I get way too excited.

PUNK 57 IS MUST READ ROMANCE OF 2016. NO DOUBT.

They love their family unconditionally and that comes with protecting it. But where’s the line? Is there one? Is it betrayal if you do or don’t speak up? Is it morally right? What about slut-shaming? And consent? Those are the questions that You Against Me subtly deals with while giving us a moving love story.

I can’t recommend this book enough. Read it and you will understand. This book is incredibly real, heart-breaking and pure beautiful. One of the best thing I have read this year. Maybe ever.

on Cam Girl by Elliot Wake (FKA Leah Reader).

Oh Elliot Wake. Check out my previous review of Unteachable  if you’ve never read anything by him. And then read Black Iris that left me so speechless I couldn’t even review. Enjoy!

Review:

How can I POSSIBLY review Cam Girl? If it was up to me, I would create extra stars on GR because this book deserves them all. You need to read this book whoever you are. This book is a MUST.

Recently, I’ve just went through a rough patch of bad books (the last good one was Black Iris also by Elliot Wake LOL) and Cam Girl was just perfect. It had the amazingly colourful writing, gritty storyline and flawed characters. OMG and even disabled representation and people of colour!!!!! Thank you Elliot Wake. So what’s not to love?

Cam Girl had the ultimate mysteries that kept you wondering throughout this book (just check my status updates!). The most important parts of the mysteries however wasn’t who or what but how and why. The book uncovered piece by piece and at the it came together in a most beautiful way. Not gonna lie – I shed some tears. Everything just made sense.

So why do I think you should read this book? It deals with internalised homophobia. This book brought up some questions that I didn’t even know I had – that’s why it’s going on close-to-my-heart-shelf. Beside that Cam Girl dealt with stuff like non-binary. Fluidity. Masculinity. Femininity. It makes you think. But don’t think it’s like an encyclopedia of queerness. Vada, the main character, brings you on journey of self-discovery (in the non-cheesiest way possible) and while she is flawed and you want to shake her sometimes, you can’t help but root and sympathise with her. Cam Girl is full of kickass, interesting characters like Ellis (Vada’s BFF and maybe more?) and Frankie (Vada’s badass cam boss). However the most exciting thing for me was seeing characters from Black Iris and finding out how they are connected to Cam Girl characters!

Basically, read this book. It’s much better than my review because how can you review something so uniquely beautiful? So many beautiful quotes. Truly.

P.S. It pisses me off when something like this can get 1* on GR. Tbh, some reasons I could understands – this book might not be for everyone. But seriously though, I saw a review that said Cam Girl was over the top with portraying homophobia and it was not a thing because gay people at their high school were popular. Uhm…………. Well what do you have to say about Orlando shooting?

So this one is hard. I’m a massive P&P fan and I’ve been waiting to read this book for ages. The reviews got me all hyped up…….
….. and I was slightly let down.

While the author definitely stayed true to the original characters and accurately adapted them to the contemporary world, it just didn’t work. What I found endearing about the Bennets in the original was lacking in Eligible. Lizzy, the independent, smart-mouth woman from P&P was replaced with a naive woman, who judges her family way too much and occasionally says problematic stuff herself.

“It was immediately obvious to Liz that Georgie was anorexic.”

But not to trash Liz entirely, sometimes she stepped it up and was a badass – especially when it came to Darcy. The only thing that was interesting about Darcy though, was his romance with Liz. That’s it. Nothing else. Nada. And by the end, he said shit like, “Even when you’re judging them, you do it with such care and attention.” (about Liz). HJDJHSGDFHWEGHGBJHY, SERIOUSLY?

Speaking of boring – Jane, Kitty, Mr Bennet and Chip Bingley were almost unbearable at times and their presence did not give much to the storyline. Mostly, they just dragged the book. Lydia on the other hand was intriguing and she was probably my favourite character in Eligible. If you are considering reading this book, do it for Lydia.

Unfortunately, the book itself was a bit too long and lots of the parts could have been cut. It was not a bad read, I was quite enjoying it up until the last 20% when Liz started saying problematic things and everything just got real cheesy way too quick. Instead of blabbering on about Jane and Bingley, the book would have been much better with less rushed ending of Liz and Darcy.

The verdict? Read it if you like P&P. Otherwise, it’s a waste of time.
